The Civil Aviation Administration of China on September 1st announced the opening of country’s first test-flight base for civilian drones in Shanghai. The base, located in the district of Qingpu, will provide service to thousands of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in a country where private drones have become very popular. Drones in China are required to fly at a height below 150 meters and all test flights to be monitored for safety reasons to avoid obstructing air operations.

According to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of China, there’re over 120,000 registered drones in the country. China has approximately 500 drone manufacturers, controlling almost 70 percent of market share. The use of UAV, initially used in videography, for recreational purposes, security and agriculture, has expanded dramatically.

This event has brought together over 800 C-level executives and government officials from across the global smart city ecosystem and explored the latest technology innovation. Tilt-rotor aircraft offer the efficiencies and speed of a fixed-wing aircraft combined with the virtues of a helicopter: vertical-take-off and landing and the ability to hover and monitor from an aerial vantage point.

Shanghai UVS Intelligence System’s U650 amphibious drone

Shanghai UVS Intelligence System is set to become the first company in the world to bring to market a commercial drone that’s able to take off and land on water. It says the roughly 20-foot long unmanned seaplane, known as the U650, could be used by businesses and the military.

The U650 drones should be rolling off factory production lines in Shanghai by the end of the year, a company spokeswoman said. That would put UVS ahead of other firms that have developed amphibious drones but haven’t yet moved beyond prototypes into production, according to analysts.

The U650 can stay in the air for up to 15 hours, flying as far as 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles), according to the company. But heavy cargoes will reduce those numbers.
